Large drain hole.

Here is our all-new hydroponic watering system. This was made from 2 storage containers and 1 large sandwich box.
A submersible pond pump & timer automatically waters the plants.
2 to 4 holes in the flooding container provides a low tech watering solution, which cannot overflow outside the unit.

Coco-coir pots watered by hand are great too but use lots of water.

We guarantee that pure coco-coir delivers the fastest and most powerful plants than any other substrate.

  • Our all-new hydroponic system is cheap and easy to make, reliable to run.

  • Plants are automatically watered with a submersible pond pump. Once a day for 1 minute. Twice a day if needed.

  • Uses virtually zero energy.

  • 2 to 4 holes in the flooding container are sufficient to provide a reliable watering effect using a pond pump with a  rating of 450 Litres Per Hour (LPH).

  • Uses pure coco-coir as the optimal growing medium for hydroponic plants, which is enhanced by a virtually symbiotic relationship.

  • Sprouting seeds can be planted directly into the moist coco coir, ideally with a 2cm+ root, but any size root can be planted from 1mm.

  • A large central drainage hole 30mm x 30mm ensures good drainage.

  • Plants grow on without repotting until harvest, even in the smallest pots of coco-coir.

Germinate seeds reliably and cleanly using coffee filters.

  • Soak seeds in water for 48 hours.

  • Place the soaked seeds between wet coffee filters.

  • Cover to keep moist.

  • Plant out into coco-coir when the root emerges.

  • Plant the root only without bending it. Emerging seed leaves should be above the coco-coir.

COIR

COCO

This hydroponic flood and drain system is sufficient for growing 2+ plants. If you plan to grow 3 or more plants, please remember the plants get very large; Leaves need space for light. FYI, 2 plants can be grown in one pot.

Use a good hydroponic fertilizer that comes in two parts, often called A + B. Don't worry about the run out date of the water mixed fertilizer. It doesn't go bad quickly. Continue to use it until the end of the harvest. Stick to the same mix. Don't change the water from Grow to Bloom. Use one or the other. Changed water recipes just result in damaged plants.

The growing medium should be pure coco coir. Don't add anything else to the coco-coir. The growing rate in coco-coir is fantastic. The pure coco-coir facilitates a virtual symbiotic relationship in the roots of hydroponically grown plants. Newbs, get ready for high yields and strong herbs. This system will put you on the map with little effort. All watering is automatic, so need for daily watering.

IMPORTANT: Hydroponics systems can use 1 to 2 litres of water a week when the plants are in full swing. Make sure enough water is in the tank for daily watering to avoid dissapointment.

The optimal growing medium for plants is pure coco coir.

Coco-coir does not inherently form a symbiotic relationship, but it can facilitate one by providing an ideal substrate for beneficial microbes like mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria to thrive in.

This combination helps plants absorb more nutrients, improves root development, and increases overall plant health, demonstrating how the coir medium supports a beneficial symbiosis between the plant and its associated microbes.

Coir coir lets the roots breathe, which is one of the most important factors in any growing medium being used to grow cannabis. It is an excellent rooting medium for all types of plants. It’s like giving your plants the perfect balance of hydration and breathing room.

Stable pH Level: No more worrying about pH imbalances throwing off your plants’ groove. Coir Vital Grow maintains a stable pH level, providing a consistent environment for your plants to thrive.

Fill the containers with moist coco coir. The plant pots don't have to be very large, they just need to fit the hydroponic system so that daily watering sustains the plants. Roots will protrude beneath the pots. This is perfectly normal. Automatic watering from the hydro system will allow roots to develop within the pots and keep protruding roots moist too; A reciprocal relationship develops between the plant and the coco-coir, enhancing root growth.

A pond pump with a rating of 450 Litres Per Hour (LPH) is sufficient to provide a flood and drain effect in the example below. However, any pond pump can achieve the same flood and drain effect using less drainage holes, and run for longer e.g. 2 minutes. A good quality submersible pond pump with a good safety record is reccomended. Remember electricity and water don't mix. The overall sturdyness and safety record of the pump is of foremost importance.

Large drain hole.

4 small drain holes provide the optimum flood & drain using a pond pump with a rating of 450 Litres Per Hour (LPH).

Start with 2 drain holes as less drain holes may flood better for your requirements.

A large drain hole 3cm x 3cm is important to prevent blockages.

A piece of neoprene-padding, or any waterproof silicone sealant, creates a seal around the drain hole. Bolts secure the rig.

This is the flooding container. The simple mechanism of flooding faster than water can drain out provides a great water management solution. When the inner container is full, the outer container prevents any spills.

2 to 4 drain holes are sufficient to provide a reliable flood and drain effect using a 450 Litres Per Hour (LPH) pond pump. Adjust your drainage by starting with 2 holes. Add more holes later if required. Less is more. You don't want the water to escape more quickly than your submersible pump can fill the container.

Drained water falls directly into a funnel to reduce water noise and dripping. This keeps watering nice and quiet. The funnel is attached below the main drain hole. This only needs attaching with wire or cable ties.

A B plant food 2.jpg

Use a high quality Hydroponic A plus B mineral plant FOOD.

In a container of 10 litres of water, add 25mls of A, and 25mls of B.

Plant Food A contains the calcium etc. Plant Food B contains magnesium etc.
For best results, do not change the water recipe between vegging and flowering stages. Choose either vegging or flowering plant food. Stick to it! You may also add custom nutes, like 5mls of liquid seaweed per litre water. Stick to the custom water & plant food mix.

A timer is essential for the hydroponic system to rehydrate the coco-coir.

When the timer switches on, the flooding container fills quicker than it can drain.
When the timer switches off, the water drains out leaving the substrate rehydrated.
This is expected to take about 1 minute, once or twice a day.

Here is a short clip to illustrate our hydroponic watering system using a submersible water pump. When the pond pump is in operation, th amount of water taken out of the tank for hydroponjc flooding lowers the water level. Therefore keep your hydroponics tank well topped up to ensure watering is maintained.
